A Client Story: When the Plan Meets Real Life

The Situation

A client came to us with a straightforward question:

Can my current financial path support the lifestyle I’ve built?

On paper, many of the fundamentals were strong. Income was healthy, assets had grown steadily over time, and there was a viable path toward long-term financial goals.

However, one factor stood out immediately. The household’s spending level was high—and there was little expectation that it would meaningfully ever change.

The Reality Behind the Numbers

Within the household, financial decisions were approached differently. One partner was highly engaged in long-term planning and regularly thought about future goals and financial security. The other was more focused on maintaining the day to day lifestyle the family had come to enjoy.

Neither perspective was right or wrong. They simply reflected different priorities, creating a dynamic that needed to be incorporated into the planning process.

The Conversation

Rather than focusing on what should change, we focused on understanding the implications of current choices. The goal wasn’t to persuade anyone to spend less or live differently.

It was to provide a clear picture of how today’s decisions could influence tomorrow’s opportunities.

Together, we:

  • Projected income and assets over time
  • Evaluated the sustainability of current spending habits
  • Identified areas where flexibility existed
  • Examined potential risks if key assumptions changed

Understanding the Trade-Offs

As the analysis came together, several important realities emerged.

Maintaining the current level of spending could affect:

  • The timing of retirement
  • Long-term financial flexibility
  • Certain legacy and wealth-transfer goals

There wasn’t a single “right” answer. The plan could adapt in a number of ways—through changes in income, spending, timelines, or expectations.

Each option came with trade-offs. The value was in understanding each before making decisions.

The Outcome

The meeting didn’t end with a dramatic change in behavior or a major financial overhaul. Instead, it delivered clarity.  The client left with a deeper understanding of how spending, income, assets, and long-term goals interacted—and what would be required to sustain the life they envisioned.

A Broader Reflection

Financial planning rarely happens in a vacuum. It exists within the realities of family dynamics, personal priorities, and habits that can be difficult to change. In those situations, the role of planning isn’t to force alignment. It’s to create awareness. When people understand the trade-offs associated with their choices, they can make decisions with greater confidence—grounded in both their aspirations and their reality.
